History of the Yadkin Valley AVA

The Yadkin Valley became North Carolina’s first AVA (American Viticultural Area) back in 2003. The area stretches several counties and includes wineries and vineyards from Surry, Yadkin, Wilkes, Davie, Davidson, Forysth, and Stokes counties. There are 48 wineries in North Carolina’s Yadkin Valley.

Historic District in Downtown Elkin

Downtown Elkin, NC is known for its charm and independent businesses. It is centrally located in the Yadkin Valley wine region and makes for an excellent stop for lunch and an afternoon perusing all that it has to offer. The town was established in the late 1800’s as a textile mill town. There is plenty to do in downtown Elkin, from a variety of restaurants and coffee shops/bakeries, to quaint shops, murals, local art, and more.

Denton Farm Park

If your trip to the Yadkin Valley is a family-oriented one, consider taking your kids to the Denton Farm Park, a family-owned historical park with 15 restored buildings including a general store, grist mill, church, plantation house, blacksmith shop, and log cabin. A full-size steam train encompasses the park on a 1½ mile track. They also have a campground that accommodates 500 campsites.

Wine Festivals

When you’re in the heart of a bustling wine region, of course there are wine festivals! Yadkin Valley Wine Festival in Elkin; Budbreak Wine and Craft Beer Festival in downtown Mount Airy; Yadkin Valley Grape Festival in Yadkinville, and the North Carolina Wine Festival in Clemmons. Whichever festival you choose, you’ll discover, taste and enjoy the best wines North Carolina has to offer, including many varieties from local Yadkin Valley wineries.

Harvest Festival

The Yadkin Valley Harvest Festival is an annual event where, for one day of the year, the entire downtown area of Yadkinville is transformed by celebration. Festivities include activities for the entire family, live music, agricultural displays, food vendors, and more! And, the Center Bistro will be open for business!

Outdoor Activities

Granite City Greenway

Tracing the Ararat River & Lovills Creek, Granite City Greenway forms a 6.6-mile horseshoe around Mt. Airy. The paved route allows for walking, running & cycling. It also includes kayak & canoe launches and trout fishing spots for those who love the water.

Rock Climbing at Pilot Mountain

Rock climbing and rappelling are favorite activities at Pilot Mountain State Park where rocky cliffs offer a challenge to experienced climbers.

Elkin and Alleghany Rail Trail

The Elkin & Alleghany Rail Trail is a two-mile trail (one way) following the old E&A Railroad bed along Big Elkin Creek. The trailhead is at Elkin Municipal Park in the heart of Yadkin Valley, NC.

Hanging Rock State Park

If you’re looking for some outdoor adventure, then check out Hanging Rock State Park. The park offers overnight accommodations with 73 campsites. It also has picnic grounds, a stocked lake for swimming and canoe rentals, and more than 20 miles of hiking trails that climb onto spectacular views and weave alongside clear streams and waterfalls. There is also access on the Dan River for paddling, 8.4 miles of mountain biking trails and rock climbing opportunities with permit.
